ST DOMINIC’S CHURCH AND OUR LADY OF FATIMA

On 13th May each year, an annual procession of transferring the Blessed Virgin Mary to Penha Hill starts at St. Dominic's Church.  It is dedicated to the celebration of the apparition in 1917 of Our Lady of Fatima in Fatima, Portugal.  The celebration is held to pray for the peace of the world and for the renewal of all human race.

The Procession of Our Lady of Fatima, an intangible cultural heritage of Macau, first took place in 1929.  The procession features two girls and a boy attired in Portuguese traditional costumes, symbolizing the shepherds who witnessed the apparition.  With recitations of rosary and singing of hymns all along, the procession makes its way from the St. Dominic’s Church to the Penha Chapel, providing a very impressive scene.

The procession's starting point, St. Dominic’s Church, was founded in 1587 by three Spanish Dominican priests.  It was is also named the “Rosary Church” because of its connection to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary.  The Church was originally constructed using camphorwood, but since rebuilt in stone in the 17th century.  Architecturally, intricate white plastered ornaments and mouldings on the church façade contrast with the yellow rendered walls, characterising the main elevation of St. Dominic’s Church.

The church measures 24 metres tall, and occupies an area of over 1,300 square metres.  It consists of the nave, the chancel and a three-storey high bell tower, which has been modified into the Museum of Sacred Art, now exhibiting a collection of around 300 artifacts, some of which were discovered during its renovation.

St. Dominic’s Church entered the lists of World Heritage Site in 2005, and currently forms part of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
